poisoning by mouth is often common with children, getting into things that should not be gotten into
a rule of thumb is you should never put something in your mouth unless it is food or drink— and to keep known toxic substances out of reach.
toxic substances are things that could hurt you if they go into your body— like medicine you aren't supposed to take, cleaning supplies, or laundry supplies.
to prevent poisoning by mouth, it is best to never put something in your mouth unless it is food or drink, and to prevent it with kids, make sure to keep everything that is dangerous out of reach. It is also a good idea to label everything in your cabinets, so nothing is ingested by accident.
Of course, the first thing you'd want to do is call your local poison control phone number. Poison control will connect you with someone who can tell you whether or not the person who ingested the harmful substance needs to go to the hospital.
some things poison control might tell you to do are:
give them a lot of fluids— this is called dilution. By giving them lots of water, you can lessen the effects of the poison on their body
Inducing vomiting- this can sometimes be dangerous, so do not do this unless a medical provider (or poison control) told you to. By throwing up, the person is getting the poison out of their stomach.
call 911— poison control may tell you to call 911 if nothing can be done at home to help the person.
